Initial set-up and test area

The instructions and precautions included with the device are easy to understand. I had no trouble setting myself up to do my first session. I chose to start with one inconspicuous area on my leg as a test spot. I prepped the area as directed and used the device as stated. The sensation was a bit uncomfortable, but nothing that would prevent me from using it over a larger area or for repeated applications. I've read some very interesting information about this type of light therapy and am excited to see the results. I will give the test area a day or so to see how it responds (i.e., no irritation--it takes several applications over time to see results) and then will begin an area for hair-removal in earnest and will report back on the results with before-and-after photos. I have fair skin and dark hair, which I think is an ideal combination for effectiveness. I received this product for free from Braun in exchange for my review, though my opinions are all my own. It really works! But treatment is not pleasant

I was excited to try my new Gillette Venus Silk-expert powered by Braun for free from Braun! The instructions are thorough and answered all of my questions. Since there is a precaution against treating recently tanned skin, and that treated skin should not be exposed to the sun for 24 hours, I had to delay trying this out. Now that summer is sadly over, I have been treating my underarms and my legs. I was happy that no assembly is required. It's just the Silk-expert and the power cord. The Silk-expert is simple to use, but since most body parts are curved, it's a bit awkward at times to angle the unit in a way that the sensors are able to get a reading. It just takes some maneuvering. After the first week, I noticed a considerable reduction in hair...after 4 weeks, I wasn't shaving those areas at all. It really works! The real reason I gave this only 3 stars is that the sensation of the pulses is unpleasant. It only lasts a fraction of a second but it hurts for that fraction of a second. The pain doesn't last but it makes me not want to keep using it. So why do I keep using it? Because it actually works after the first treatment. Plus treatments are only once a week. I don't know if I would have purchased this on my own, and I would only recommend this to a friend if she really hated shaving. Really, really hated it. Pretty Impressed

I initially thought this product would not work that great. However, I am pretty impressed with the results. I have used this product for 3 weeks so far and have already seen a difference in certain areas. I have used this on my bikini line, legs, arms, hands, knuckles, and underarms. The hair on my arms grows in a lot slower and not as noticeable as before. My hands and knuckles have seen the same results. I previously removed my underarm hair with laser removal, but there were a few strands that still grow out so I have been using it on that. I can't really tell yet if that has improved or not. I am also unable to tell what it is doing for my leg hair. Some spots still grow out quickly, but I could be missing some spots. I have been most impressed with the results from my bikini line. The hair there normally grows back really quickly. I have seen pretty quick results and don't have to shave as often already. I can't wait to see the results at 12 weeks. Nice hair removing tool so far!

I was so excited to try the Venus Silk Expert IPL hair remover from Braun for free! I had laser treatments done on my bikini area before at a treatment facility which hurt like crazy and was so expensive, but gave me good results, so I wasn't sure what to expect from a home device. So far, so good with this one! It was a very easy set up-just plug in the power supply cord into the device and then into the wall and the power fan automatically turns on. The directions are simple too...just make sure you keep good skin contact for the sensors, which is easy to tell because there are white lights on the sides that light up when it is being used correctly. Then you just press the glide button continuously as you move the device slowly across your desired hair removal area and you're done! The pain initially was about a 5/10, but it definitely varies with each user and I got used to it the more I used it on my legs. The device feels very hot on your skin as you're using it, like little tiny shocks, but is much easier than the laser treatment "shocks" I felt at a laser treatment facility and it made me feel like it was working now having had compared the two types of treatment. I can't wait to see the results after a full course...12 weeks (only once a week). The only problem I had was before I even started because I hadn't realized when I signed up that you couldn't use it on newly tanned skin, which is kind of hard to do in the summer. It says to wait a week after tanning, but I'm not sure if my tanned skin will affect the results or not at this point. So I had to wait a little while before I could actually use this item. The darker your skin, the less power/joules the device will output, so it may not work as well or it may take a longer period of time to get the same results. If your skin is too dark, it won't work at all, but luckily, I was still in good range for treatment! Overall, I recommend this product so far for its ease of use. First Thoughts

When I was chosen to review the new Gillette Venus Silk Expert Intense Pulsed Light Hair Removal System complimentary from Braun, I was super excited but not too sure what to expect. I had no experience with hair removal methods other than shaving or waxing. I'm pretty sure I don't know anyone who's used an IPL device either. When the box arrived, I read the booklet inside and was surprised to find so many warnings. After I was sure I understood the manual, I decided to try it that night after I was freshly shaved. I skimmed over the manual again and read the instructions step by step again. I realized that this wouldn't be very complicated. The fan started whirring after I plugged it in, and the power bars lit up once. I held the IPL device to my leg and saw the skin tone sensor lights come on. I thought, so far, so good, all was in working order. I tried the regular mode first to see how it felt. Whoa, it was a big flash and a bit too much of a burning feeling. I worried that even the gentle mode might be too much for me. I looked at the directions again to check that the button with the feather was the gentle mode. Success! I closed my eyes during the flashes, and using the gliding gentle mode I was able to start treating my leg comfortably. As the picture illustrates in the manual, I pulled the device up my leg with the treatment window horizontally. I did have trouble around my ankle and shin bones, as the 2 skin tone sensors did not both touch my skin. Next week I will use the treatment window vertically to try covering those areas. As I was using the device I became more relaxed and started enjoying the thought of doing this once a week to shave less often. I went ahead and treated my armpits as well. When I was finished, I unplugged the device and set it down to cool. About 10 minutes later, I pulled off the front section to see how easy it was to clean the Silk-expert. It came off by pulling event on both sides. I wiped it with a tissue, though I didn't see anything different about the front section or the glass filter other than a small black dot on the front section. Then I easily repacked the device into the box, excited for next week's treatment.Today, the day after I treated my legs and armpits, I feel no different. There is no pain, burning, or visible change. I've always wanted an easier way to remove hair. The fact that this is a noninvasive, minimally painful, convenient way to remove hair for long periods of time or even forever is exactly the type of product I would look for. Quality product that delivers what it promises!

s review is from: Gillette Venus Silk-expert IPL 5008 (Intense Pulsed Light) Hair Removal System, powered by Braun (Health and Beauty) I had read about this device long before I received the product. I knew the principles of how it works but was a little skeptical if it would work for me or not. I thought that maybe since my natural hair color is not necessarily very dark (and my skin is light) it might not work or work well; however, after my third treatment I am seeing a significant reduction in hair growth. I read the directions very thoroughly before I started use (which I recommend highly) so that you know exactly how to place the device on the skin and how to know when it is ready for use. The light display which indicates when the device is in place correctly is easy to see and know that you have it right no matter how the device is positioned. I started using the device on my underarms and bikini area and am was pleased with the early results. I have done a total of five treatments which are quick and easy, not at all painful. I simply waited until I shaved my skin with my normal razor and, once the skin is dry, I used the device. Being that I don't have thick hair or fast growing body hair I used it weekly for the first three treatments and every couple of weeks for the last two treatments. The treatments became more spread out because the hair growth had slowed down. The fourth and fifth treatments were done to catch those last hairs that were stubborn. I believe they were more stubborn to remove because they were lighter in color and closer to my skin color than the hairs that stopped growing with the earlier treatments. In the end, I am almost hair free under my arms. I believe I can continue with treatments and eventually all of the hair might go away. Regardless if I decide to do this or not, I have very little hair left under my arms which does not show up easily when not shaved for a very long period of time. The device does heat up when in use but is not painful or uncomfortable in my opinion. It is also easy to hold so that it makes the correct skin contact in order to function. Even in those curvy parts that you would think would be difficult, it is very easy to make the right contact with the skin so that the device can work. I was concerned that my bikini area might be sensitive so I used the button for sensitive skin on the first use in that area. The second time I used the regular setting and found that it did not cause any real discomfort in this area of my body. On my underarms I immediately used the regular setting and had no issues or discomfort. I am incredibly happy with the results from this product. I would say users need to realize it is the type of product that will take some time to provide the full promised results and this was very okay with me as I did see results. I am thrilled to not have to shave as much and hope not at all soon. This product also came with an electric skin exfoliator brush. I did not realize this would be in the product pack and so it was a happy little surprise. I have used these electric skin care brushes before and have had mixed feelings about them. This one works very well when compared to others I have tried in the past. It is a very gentle brush but seems to be pretty effective at removing the dead skin cells on your face and giving a deep clean feeling. I am impressed with this product as well. Please note: I have received this product at no cost from Braun in order to provide a fair and honest product review as part of their product promotion. A Light as Bright as Indy's Ark of the Covenant!

Holy Covenant Indy! This thing is BRIGHT! So you know when Indy and Marion are tied to the post and Indy tells her to shut her eyes, don't look at the Ark? It's kinda like that. Get out your sunglasses--seriously, that makes it easier. So I received this product free to try in exchange for an honest review. I opened the Gillette® Venus® Silk-expert powered by Braun® and my first thought was, "They've been paying attention to Apple's packaging." The packing is quality paper board with glossy print, lots of clean, stark white and black, with precise-fitting packaging and lots of "white space" around the items (this unit came with a bonus facial brush). The IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) unit itself is solidly built, and dense--it feels substantial in your hand. (And after reading the entire user's manual, it also feels just sliiiiiightly threatening too. But you get over that after the first use or two. The siren song of a hairless future is enough to make me brave it!) So reading's done and it's go time. Easy to plug in, fan whirs, button is pressed, and pop! goes the bright light. It's REALLY bright. Follow the directions--look away if you can. Wear sunglasses if you can't. I'd probably don my old tanning bed glasses if I knew where in Hades they were. There's a little snap when the light flashes, but it's nothing--on that pain chart in the delivery room? You know the one--it's the big smiley face, the 1--the baby's coming? What baby? Anyway, I did a test area and had zero reaction the following day. So now I'm working on my underarms--they're a small area (aka easy to cover in a short period of time), are super white (my tanning bed days are long gone), and the hair is really dark there. (The best case for optimal results, the manual tells me? Light skin, dark hair). So it should be easier for me to observe the results there over time. The manual says it takes 4 weeks or more to see results, so it's too soon to tell, but I would love to be rid of my coarse, dark underarm hair--who needs a 5 o' clock pit shadow, really? And if it truly cuts down on that hair growth, I'll be tackling the much larger leg area after that!HOWEVER, I should say, I hate having to shave my legs, so much so, that I don't do it that often--it has to be miserably hot out and I have to have a clean, cute dress to wear--essentially the cosmos have to align. That means that IF these underarms DO become less Sasquatch-y, and more Princess-y, I will have to resign myself to shaving my legs regularly. AND as Game of Thrones keeps reminding us, WINTER IS COMING. AKA the blessed period of no leg shaving with no judgement. It will be TOUGH to get me to shave in the cooler months just so I can use this IPL unit on smooth skin. (Trust me, you must be smooth-skinned--the smell and spark-like sensation that comes with even a tiny bit of stubble is NO BUENO.) At this stage in the trial use process (early, with few motivating visible results) I can say that I would not buy this unit at retail price--it's too expensive and requires me to shave MORE initially so that I can shave LESS eventually. Any time I spend a lot on something (which is rare) I feel compelled to use it a lot to feel like I'm getting my money's worth. And it's hard to compel me to do something I dislike, or something with such delayed gratification. (This is why I let my gym membership lapse. I'm time-pressed, dislike working out, results take a while, and I just didn't go to the gym enough to justify the expense.) Since I didn't spend a dime on this IPL unit, I think it's pretty dang cool. If I HAD bought it, I would be wondering who possessed me when I bought it--definitely someone with more discretionary income and generally darker body hair than I. So who buys this? The person with fair skin, dark body hair and considerable discretionary income, who doesn't mind shaving regularly, but does mind shaving regularly jussssst enough to want to stop. It's a bit of a niche product in that regard. :) [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Hairy Beast is no more

I have been using the Venus Silk Expert I received complimentary from Braun in exchange for an honest review for 8 weeks. It totally works! I tested a specific spot on my left leg once a week. I noticed after a couple of weeks the hair wasn't growing as quickly and the pores looked smaller. Even a family member could tell a difference when I told them about the device I was testing. After 4 weeks I was definitely noticing that the area I was testing was quite a bit smoother and with less hair than the rest of my leg. Then this past week I went about 4 days without shaving and there was NO HAIR in the spot I was testing. This is going to be such a time saver once I have done other parts of my body! There are a couple of negatives, but they would not prevent me from buying this device. - First, the part that touches your skiname can heat up very quickly and become uncomfortable to use. It's not horrible, but I let it cool off before I continue to other areas. - Second, it can sometimes give a bit of what I can only describe as a sting. I have started using this on my underarms. No matter how well I shave or dry the area is, I still feel a sting when I use it. I even have the feather button pushed so it is not as strong of a pulse. Other than that, I love it! One I think that would be nice to have is a case to store it in. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

venus silk expert... Removes hair from wooly woman

I must admit that my least favorite job in the world is shaving my legs!!! I have always been prone to razor burns and I have very thick coarse, dark hair on my legs. That's why I was very excited to try the Gillette Venus Silk Expert that I received free from Braum for my honest opinion. There are two ways to use gliding mode and precision mode. The gliding mode is good for large areas and precision mode is best for smaller areas. It is very easy to use. For gliding you just press a button and slowing move it up. It is also dummy proof... It will not flash unless it is against the skin properly and the skin color is appropriate. The precision mode allows you to put it in one place and push the button. I found the precision mode easier on the lower parts of my leg..especially up my shins and around ankle area. The gliding mode worked great for my upper leg. I did not experience any pain, redness or discomfort. I did smell a slight smell of burning hair. I am very excited about this product and can't wait to share the results with you in a few weeks!!!
